Subject Alumni Gym/other facilities
The Johnson Center is not the only recreational facility that the University of Kentucky offers to students. It also offers the Alumni Gym, the Seaton Center, and the Lancaster Aquatic Center. All of these facilities can be accessed by students. The Alumni Gym is indeed smaller than the Johnson Center but it is very convenient for the students that are living on north campus because the Johnson Center is all the way down on south campus. It would be a workout just running there! The alumni gym is a little bit older than the Johnson Center but it does over various amounts of cardio machines. The Lancaster Aquatic facility is right next to the Johnson Center and during their free swims while swim team practice is not going on, it offers ten lanes to swim laps, an open area to do other activities and diving boards. As long as you are a UK student, you can have access to this during the free swims. UK offers multiple gyms/facilities to its students but they all could be upgraded a little bit.

Blog #16 Reflection

Over the course of doing these blog posts and research about the Johnson Center, it forced me to get down to the nitty gritty and find out more in depth information. I had to ask questions off of questions to get even deeper into my research. I would have to go far into the Johnson Center website, not just the main page. I feel like I did really well on analyzing each piece of information that I found. I would connect it to the students here at the university. Also, I feel like I did really well on progressively getting better each week of writing my blogs. I got the hang of it and it just came to me more easily. I tended to have some difficulty finding the information because I have had to write fifteen blogs about the same facility since the beginning of the year. It was pretty repetitive and got more difficult to find information but once I did it got fairly easier. All in all, this process of writing blogs over the past couple weeks has benefitted my abilities to write and I can better myself in the near future with writing papers and using databases along with other resources.

Blog #15 Survey

For this blog I conducted a survey that I handed out to five guys and five girls that were at the Willy T library last night. The questions were as followed:
Do you use the Johnson Center?
If so, how often do you go?
What part of the Johnson Center is your favorite?
What do you like the most about it?
What do you like the least about it?

Many of the answers that I got from the girls were very similar but the guys varied a fair amount. Most of the girls said that their favorite aspect of the Johnson Center was the running track and the multiple treadmills offered. They usually did not have many problems with the Johnson Center. A few girls said that the space was small but that it did not really matter that much to them because they are usually upstairs working out. The boys on the other hand had a fair amount of problems. They got mad about the fact that the weight room was always crowded and the space was limited. They really enjoyed how nice the equipment was though. A few guys loved the basketball and racquetball courts. They both tended to agree on the fact that it needs some more space but both parties enjoy the equipment provided by the Johnson Center.

The above link takes you to the aquatic section of the website. The Johnson Center has a very nice pool that can be used by students or staff. Swimming is one of the best full body exercises you can do. It incorporates cardio with muscular endurance. They have a lap pool, along with that students or staff could take in-water classes to get in shape as well. They offer swim lessons for people that haven't learned yet. They offer scuba diving lessons for if you plan on doing that soon. Also, they offer classes and the opportunity to lifeguard if you would like to make a little extra money. This is a very underrated section of the Johnson Center because it is a little bit to the right and most students do not really notice it. The pool generally runs from 10am-8pm. It is a great way to mix up workouts too if you are getting tired of the same repetitive time on the treadmill.

Topic: Alcohol and Gaining Weight

When someone thinks about college, I'm pretty one of the first things comes to mind is drinking alcohol. A bunch of 18-22 year olds jammed into the same area. With this being said, consuming alcohol slows down your metabolism and makes you more prone to gain weight. According to the article from the New York Times, the meal in which you consume accounts for 75% of the weight you gain while drinking alcohol only accounts for 25%. In contrast, if you were to consume a cheeseburger and a couple beers while eating that, they would both effect you similarly. This article can be beneficial to the Johnson Center because many college students drink alcohol and if they knew that 25% of the weight they gain comes from consuming alcohol then maybe they could hit the gym more often than not.

Topic: Freshman 15 and The Johnson Center

This source from the database generally talks about the questioning of freshman gaining weight in their first couple semesters of college. They think it may have to do with the consumption of beer, dorm food, and stressed out munchies while studying for exams. Using this source as information to solve this problem could be beneficial for the Johnson Center. It can help students lose this abundance of weight that they supposedly gain. If students were to read articles just like this one or find out the actual dangers of the surrounding factors that they live near to gain the freshman fifteen, maybe they would show up to the Johnson Center and take a class every once in a while to stay fit. This source can help to get the word out about the freshman fifteen. If that happens, then people may consider the Johnson Center more frequently.

The Johnson Center has many great features and one of it’s greatest features it offers to students are their group fitness classes. The group fitness classes range from yoga, to spinning to TRX body weight residence classes. The Johnson Center is run mainly by University of Kentucky students and so are the fitness classes. Monday through Thursday fitness classes run from six thirty am to 9 pm and on the weekends classes vary depending on the day. A popular group fitness class, especially among girls, is cycling class. It’s an hour long class of stationary bike class in the cycling room that includes approximately thirty five stationary bikes as well as black lights and a state of the art speaker system. I had the pleasure of attending a cycling class recently and realized that it is much more cardio intensive then I thought. The bike has tension adjustments that are turned up through out the class to make it more challenging. Within the first ten minutes I was exhausted, and was completely out of breathe at the end of the hour but it was a great workout. I had savannah as my cycling instructor and she was very encouraging through out the whole experience. I would recommend the class to anyone looking for a cardio intensive workout. For those who aren’t looking for a cardio intensive workout, the Johnson Center offers yoga, Pilates and even a twenty minute “core blast” abdominal workout class. If you enjoy working out in a group setting, I guarantee there is a class at the Johnson center for you.
