Title: Outdoor Facilities
Author: The Johnson Center
Where: Link from Johnson Center Website

The Johnson Center has many cool additions beside just the athletic center. They have outdoor facilities that are available for students to rent. You can rent them for periods of a time and it is completely free. They have basketball courts on both sides of campus, fields out in front of the Johnson Center that you can use for a variety of things. They also have outdoor tennis courts that students can rent out and use for free. You can also rent out picnic areas for group events and various different events for students. They also have a gym on the other side of campus that is called Alumni Gym and is available for students from 8pm-12pm Monday through Thursday. They have basketball courts that students can rent out and use with their friends. This is where the club teams practice every night for basketball and volleyball. This also houses the UK body shop. This is a good website and article to use for my documentary because it is another thing that the Johnson Center has for kids to use during different seasons and to get them outside and being active. I think its a cool idea to have courts and other things to rent out because not all students want to be on a team or in a club because of the time but it gives them a chance to get out of the dorm and have fun with their friends.
Reflection Blog

My writing format for this proposal was pretty similar as how I write most of my papers. With a strong thesis and information to back it up. I used three body paragraphs like the typical five paragraph essay with a conclusion to tie my thesis back. It was pretty difficult to turn this paper into a shark tank proposal. I had to adjust my problem to find out ways to benefit the Johnson Center. Once I found out a solid problem I used my research that I found to back it up so we as a whole can fix the dilemma. My strengths in writing this paper were my ability to provide a strong argument with valid research to help me out. Another one of my strengths would be my ability to provide a strong hook and background information about my problem. I addressed the problems of gaining the freshman 15. This is a big concern for all college students because of the lack of drive to work out for some students and the dorm food did not help my case either. My weakness was probably getting the format down because that has typically always been my problem with writing papers. Another one of my weaknesses would be my transitions from point to point because I usually do not do to well on that either. All in all, I felt like I provided a strong argument with great information to back it up.

The Johnson Center also has an aquatic center that is available to all students. They offer many things to the students such as career opportunities through lifeguarding, swimming lessons and different events for the students. You can go during the open hours and swim or take swim lessons from lifeguards at the Johnson Center if you don’t know how to swim. You can also learn how to scuba dive at the Johnson Center Aquatic area. It’s a free class offered to all UK Students if they want to try something new. They also offer a fly fishing class in the spring which is also a cool thing for kids to learn how to do at college. It’s a free class for the students at UK and it’s a good way to get active and involved in the university and meet new people. This relates to my documentary because it is a part of the Johnson Center and also expands what they already have to offer to the students. I can interview the people that work there and learn more about the swim lessons and classes that they have to offer. I think itll be a fun addition to just learning about workout equipment.

Title: University of Kentucky Fall Intramural Schedule
Author: Johnson Center
Where: Link from the UK Johnson Center Website

The Johnson Center offers intramural sports to all students at UK who are interested. There are greek life teams. Most sororities and fraternities have an intramural team for flag football and volleyball. But you do not have to be greek to play intramural sports. You just need a captain to request to be on a team. They offer three main sports Volleyball, flag football and basketball. They also have small tournaments you can be involved in. Such as corn hole, tug-o-war, golf singles, individual triathlon, kickball, tennis singles, soccer tournament, swim meet and wiffleball. For all of these events you just register online as a single or double or team depending on the event and show up the day you are supposed to. Ive talked to many people that are in them and they say its a great way to meet people and get active during the day. This helps with my project because it is another thing the Student Center is involved in on campus. Many kids love to do it so I can interview them and find out more about the different events from them. I wonder how many kids participate in intramural sports and events every year? I wonder if there is a variety of greek and non-greek teams in the flag football and volleyball leagues?

This article talks about how lucky the students of the University of Kentucky are to have such a fantastic library to use whenever they need it. The library is open till 1 in the morning for students and if you are there studying late then you can just get a ride in a golf cart or have a member of the ROTC walk you back to your dorm so you feel safe on campus. The library has multiple floors, each one serving a different purpose. You can go to different floors depending on how quiet and what resources you need. The basement offers computer help and cubbies for you to work with a partner if you need to and do group work. This relates to my project because it has to do with a student facility that benefits students and their ability to learn and exceed at the University. I wonder how many kids use the library everyday? If it is more than the student center or the Johnson center? The library also has a starbucks for the late nights you spend at the library cramming for finals. I think the library is an excellent addition to the University and many kids are thankful to have it.

Title: UK Gets $20 million gift for new student center
Author: Carolyn Trible Greer
Where: Lousville Buisness First Website

This article talks about how University of Kentucky just received a $20 million dollar donation from UK trustee and graduate Bill Gatton to help pay for the $175 million new student center. Groundbreaking is scheduled for June and to be opened in 2017. The student center will include all of the things that it has right now and will also be the home of the new visitor center. This relates to my project because it deals with the facilities that are available to all the students at the university and how it benefits them and their life at UK. Gatton has also donated money earlier in his life for the college of business, his overall donation costs add up to about $45 million dollars at UK. The new student center will offer newer and better facilities for the students but the location will remain right near where it is now. This is a good location for the student center because it is right at the heart of campus where kids are always at. I wonder if the new student center will attract more kids to come to it? Also if it will offer more amenities than it does now for the students to use?

Where you found it: University of Kentucky Website

This website talks about the student center and all that it has to offer to the university. The Student Center has many things inside of it such as the University Bookstore, Dining hall, UK Federal Credit Union, free wireless internet and free laptop use to study and do homework, the Rasdall art gallery, meeting/conference rooms, two theaters with state of the art media technology, WRFL radio, The Cats Den recreational and entertainment facility and the Center for the Student Involvement. The dining hall contains Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Subway, Sbarro, Panda Express, Greens to Go and Wildcat Pantry. This relates to my project because I’m looking at all the different student facilities on campus and what they offer to the students. They each do different things and hold different student organizations. The student center is a good place for kids to hang out and meet other people. You can also get involved with different organizations. I wonder how many people use the student center everyday? Every time I go in there it is always crowded and filled with kids doing different things. I think the student center is a great thing to have at the University of Kentucky because it gives kids a place to hang out.

This is an example of one of the outdoor pursuits that the Johnson Center has to offer, they are weekend long trips and you go to the Chattooga River in Georgia/South Carolina and go white water rafting for two days. The outdoor trips are very eventful and keep you busy. They are also very cost effective because college students are always on a budget. This is helpful for my project because it shows the different ways the Johnson Center gets involved with the student life. It also shows what they already do so we could brainstorm different ideas and trips for them to go on. The Johnson Center does 8 trips in fall alone, with more in the spring and the summer. The prices and types of trips range from 20 dollar rock climbing, to the most expensive being the white water rafting weekend. They offer backpacking, adventure hiking, bouldering, snow-skiing and day hikes. I’ve talked to kids that have gone on the outdoor pursuits and they say it’s a great way to get exercise and get off campus for a while. You can also make new friends and meet people who enjoy the same things as you. I think this a great thing that the University has to offer.

This is the Recreational Center official website it shows you the many different things you can do at the recreational center. They have many different ways to get involved such as club sports, outdoor pursuits, intramural, fitness classes, free weights, indoor track, aquatic center, and fitness equipment. This is of interest to my project because it shows how involved the recreational center is in student life around campus.  It is available to every student at Kentucky and is always busy. From the website you can schedule outdoor pursuits, sign up for intramural’s and find out information about the clubs and fitness classes. You can also find the hours of the fitness center and learn about the types of equipment they have there so you know what you are going there for ahead of time. This is helpful for University of Kentucky students because not everyone lives close to the Recreational Center so they can plan their classes and workouts ahead of time. You can also read about past outdoor pursuits and learn about the ones they have for each season this year. You can also check out outdoor equipment to use on your free time. This is important for my project because it teaches me all about the Recreational Center so I further my research based on what they have to offer.
